Murphy strikes again

Alyssa is for the most part, potty trained. It was a long road, but we're pretty much there. I've still been putting a diaper on her at night for my own peace of mind, but she hasn't wet a diaper in months. So last night I decided that we'd try sans diaper. I put one of those hospital pads under her (I still had a couple from when she was born). I do have a plastic mattress cover, but I admit, I was too lazy to put it on since I'd just washed her sheets. I figured I'd just put it on when I changed them.
I'm sure you can guess the next part. At 5a.m. this morning, this wail pierced my dreams: "Mom, I just peed in my bed!!!" I went into her room to find, that she had not only wet the bed, but my handy hospital pad was pushed to one side. She missed it completely.

So after cleaning up as well as I could in the middle of the night, I went back to bed, pondering the fact that I had to choose this particular night to decide she didn't need diapers.
Well, now I have the sheets off the bed. I guess its a good time to put the plastic cover on.

A Common Struggle

In the middle of lunch at Wendy's on Sunday, Caden said
"Why do I not get all the attention?"

Shann told Caden that he has that same question all the time. Shann explained that we need to give Alyssa attention too, and sometimes she needs a little more help than Caden because she is little.

Later in the car...

Caden: "I don't get all the attention anymore." Sigh.

Alyssa: "I get the antention because I'm small!"

Caden: "Yep, I don't get the attention. No more." Big sigh.

The Realist

At the end of Sleeping Beauty, the prince wakes the princess with 'true love's kiss'. The narrator pronounces that now they'll live happily ever after.

Caden with palms up: "But now they have to find a house they both like."

Manners

Place: My parent's home, Ohio
Event: Gift opening with my family

Caden is eyeing a large gift at the back of the tree, which he has not yet received. He is starting to get agitated. Others are opening gifts. Not yet him. He is really trying to be patient. Finally he receives a gift from my sister. Thrilled, he tears it open. It is a shirt. His eyes get a little red. He puts it down, dejected.
I whisper to him that he needs to say thank you. Very close to tears, and very politely, he says with feeling, "No thank you!".

One of my prouder parenting moments. Luckily, my sister thought this was funny. Yikes.

New Excuse

I corrected Caden for something which I've now forgotten. I told him he needs to make a better choice next time. He said "It wasn't me! It was my brain!".
